Why we ditched postcards... the answer's in an email

Sending postcards used to be one of the most familiar - and time consuming - holiday rituals.  But tweets, texts and emails are increasingly replacing "snail mail" as a way to keep in touch with friends and family, a survey has found.

Four in ten people said they no longer send holiday postcards.

But half the 2,000 Britons questioned admitted to checking and updating social networks or email while away, and almost a third admitted to feeling "out of the loop" when they could not log on.  Ten per cent said they felt anxious and lonely when they could not access email or social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The rise of the social network "postcard" is not confined to the younger generation as one in three "silver surfers" over 55 years old confessed to checking social networks while on holiday.

The research by online travel firm ebookers found that Facebook is the most popular social network site for holidaymakers to use, followed by Twitter.
